Return to training in the ‘Six Counties’ from 12th April 2021

 April 7th, 2021

The NI Executive, at their meeting on 1 April 2021, confirmed that structured outdoor training for sports organisations, in groups of up to 15 people (including coaches), can resume in the ‘Six Counties’ on Monday 12 April 2021.

This is a cautious first step on the pathway out of lockdown and the following on-pitch group numbers apply;

Adults (18+) – one group size limit 15 on the pitch

Age 13-18 – maximum two groups of 15 on the pitch (no mixing of groups)

Age 12 and below – maximum three groups of 15 (no mixing of groups)

Contact training should be kept to a minimum and the playing of matches is not permitted.

It is essential that both Executive and GAA protocols are observed at all times in particular clubs should ensure that they;

  1. Refresh risk assessments/action plans.
  2. Promote HANDS-FACE-SPACE messaging via signs.
  3. Keep records for contract tracing.
  4. Build training plans building up from Pod cohorts (15) to full squads over time.
  5. Modify training practices to build from limited contact to close contact over time.
  6. Enforce rules on no spectators (including parents) dropping children off should be present during training.
  7. Keeping all indoor facilities (except toilet/medical) closed at all times.
  8. Ensure that each person attending training has completed the GAA online health questionnaire prior to attending – this must be done for every session

An updated version of the GAA Return to Train/Play guidance is being finalised by the GAA’s Covid Advisory Group and this will be issued to clubs in the near future.

Inter-county senior training is scheduled to re-commence on Monday 19th April while outdoor non-contact training at underage level (again in pods of 15 people or less) is scheduled to re-commence in the ‘26 Counties’ on Monday 26th April.

Having GAA activity return to our fields is a positive and most welcome development but we remain in a pandemic and there is an onus on everyone to minimise risk and to play their part in ensuring that all protocols are observed. By doing this we will ensure that there is no further undue delay in our desire to ensure a full return to GAA activity at the earliest possible opportunity.

Hurling Helmet Safety

Hurling helmet safety

In advance of the 2021 GAA season, players are reminded about the need to check that their equipment is in good condition and meets the required safety standards.

The GAA would like to remind all players at all levels in all Hurling Games and Hurling Practice Sessions it is mandatory for, and the responsibility of, each individual player to wear a helmet with a facial guard that meets the standards set out in IS:355 or other replacement standard as determined by the National Safety Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

All players are advised that in the event of a head injury occurring, if the helmet being worn does not meet the standard or is modified or altered from the original manufactured state, they are not covered under the terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund.

The following helmet manufacturers currently provide products which meet the standards set out in IS:355 or other replacement standard as determined by the National Safety Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

  • Atak Sports
  • Azzuri
  • Cooper.ie
  • Marc Sports
  • Mycro
  • O’Neills

Players and parents should note that not all products provided by some of these manufacturers meet the standards of IS:355.

Once the helmet or faceguard is modified in anyway, the player is playing at an increased risk of injury and not covered under the terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund.

Every Step Counts Challenge

The club executive is delighted to announce that we have registered the club in the ‘Every Step Counts Challenge’ which commences on 13 January 2021 and will run over eight weeks until 10 March 2021, mirroring the GAA’s Ireland Lights Up walking initiative that runs each year in conjunction with Operation Transformation.

We are encouraging club and community members to join our club’s team on the MyLife App (click for video and see full instructions below)

Current Covid 19 restrictions and all associated “in force” regulations for the 6 counties will apply and take precedence at all times, as the safety and wellbeing of everyone is paramount. Advice from Get Ireland Walking is that with the continuing worsening situation the emphasis is again on safety and they further advise that, walkers should only walk within their own family unit, or with a person/s within their social bubble. Physical distance should be maintained throughout the walk.

How do club members join the challenge?
